The End is near, again and again and yet again
I have been thinking for the last few weeks about how people continue to find reasons to say that the world is going to end. Every time a new change arises or something we are not sure about, someone will make the comment about the world is going to end and here is why. The most common claim for this is, "look how much bad stuff is happening in the world, it cannot get much worse." I find this argument to be rather weak and here is why. If you look back over the history of the world, some horrible things lace the time lines. Kings, Cultures, groups, "bad guys" have been killing and stealing and dreaming up horrible things to do to each other and those who do not agree with them for thousands of years. The only difference in the world is the ability to access what is happening around the world to watch and read about it. I think that all this "bad stuff" has consistently been caring on for the existence of civilization, we just know about it now due to the media. The exponential growth that we continue to witness on the television and the internet in most regards, is just the growth of coverage around the world. As we are able to see more and more of the horrors of humanity, we are more convinced of growth and things getting worse... but I am under the impression it has been rather steady across history. I know this seems like a morbid topic to write about, but I think it can also be seen as a observation of how the media has changed our view of the world around us and opened our eyes to the other parts of the world.
